Happy Saturday to you all! Hope your week was wonderful. I have to tell you that I was happy to see that I didn't loose any readers this morning...I was a bit worried due to my admission of being a

NY YANKEE fan...it's almost like saying who you are going to vote for for president lol!!!...you will just have to guess at that one!

Ok...let's see what we are going to find today during our trip down the Rabbit Hole!!! I think this is one of my favorite things because I have no idea where it will lead! Starting time: 3:52!

First thing that caught my eye this morning was this adorable lamp...it is so adorable and I want one and so have the ingredients for it!

Taking it Outside on a budget and a black thumb!

Morning to all!

Well today's post is a bit late and that is something I never am...I mean I was 5 minutes early to the church when I got married...the priest made me wait in the back till it chimed 1:05...I was even early for the birth of both my children...really...by an entire month (both times). So you can imagine how horrific I felt when I was not on time for my Outdoors Project on Friday! You know how I have been telling you it has been doing nothing but raining here in NJ...it was the absolute truth so my blame goes to those dark and gloomy clouds and continuous drops of rain : ) My apologies to my girls from the Mission Possible Gang (check out the little update below). I guess as they say...better late than never?

This project comes with a little story but here is a sneak peek...

Well as most of my friends know...I am not an outdoor girl...even
though it looks like I live in the wilderness...there is a highway right outside that line of greenery where the sirens ring...the buses stop for the continuous rides into NYC and the traffic buzzes all day! Not exactly Home on the Range!

When the subject of outdoors came up in our little group...I was quiet and went along with the girls...I wouldn't want to deprive them of something that they love and something that they ROCK AT!!! I had NO idea what to do and if it entailed dirt and growing things...well it is not my forte...alas my thumb is black (not brown...black!) oh and did I mention I consider anything over 50 degrees HOT and that is since I was 2 years old! Oh yes...the sun...even though it is wonderful for pictures...my skin...not too thrilled because I can literally step outside in the sun for 5 minutes and have an official sunburn and about a dozen more freckles : )

Also...it called for a budget...I could have gone with something that is kind of second nature...cooking but I wanted to challenge myself a bit...so I thought to myself...Let's see if Junkin Joe could help me out and so he did...this is what he came home with...

an old vegetable tiered basket that was broken...$.49...a rusty vintage gingerbread style bracket $.79...and a very distressed...very ancient weather vane that has seen its share of WIND...$.99 !!!!

It was kind of turning into one of those connect the dot games...here's the stuff...what are you going to make?

one this is for sure...it was going to have a Shabby character to it!

It was time to come up with a plan! So...

we went into the garage and took out a plank of wood we had from our shelving craft room project...fastened that to the deck railing

(no cost -- scrap)...

screwed the bracket into the post...

then we added the weather vane to the top with a deep drill hole (it spins!)

JJ wanted it to be secure so he took out a piece of left over molding and attached that to the bracket along with an eyelet for hanging...

then it was time to hit the whole piece with some low aerosol paint in a creamy color that blended with the weathered deck...kind of brought all the odd mis-matched pieces together so they were sort of in harmony in a very shabby kind of way...

it was now time to line the baskets with some canvas I had in my crafting supplies (I use it to make banners : ) so I cut out circles and placed them in to the baskets. I purchased a little herb collection of sage rosemary and thyme for the middle tier...a pretty blooming plant for the top all for $4.59 at Trader Joe's and then the large basket was filled with Pachysandra and Myrtle from the backyard along with collecting some extra rich soil (no cost)...

had to sift out the branches and snip off the not so wonderful leaves but in the end...it was perfect for the bottom tier...

the herbs were planted and Mr. Frog joined the gang...

he's a little cutie (an orphaned pepper shaker!)

the pretty flowers adorned the top...

tier by tier it was coming together...

and in the end...for less that $10.00 we had a little hanging garden all shabby and sweet!

This is not a grand project by any means but it does show that if you think out of the box a bit...you can come up with something...even on a restricted budget and with no talent for the medium :) Now you are all probably saying...see Andrea...Happy ending...you now love the outdoors and planting well not everything has a storybook ending lol!!!! I have to admit to one and all...I still do not like to garden...I needed to take 2 showers afterwards...the air conditioning was a delight when I got back inside...but I will enjoy using the herbs in cooking! Mother Nature -- I admire your to the highest level...I really do...your beauty is just splendid but for now...it's the electric grill and some of your gorgeous marinaded vegetables...just too hot for me : )

Kari from Thistlewood Farm with her warm and inviting Southern Hospitality opens up the many possibilities are creating that perfect patio...as always her project is glorious!

Then there is my fellow Jersey girl Kelly from Eclectically Vintage! All I can tell you my friends is that she ROCKED this blue dress beauty in Bon Jovi and Springsteen style...in other words...JERSEY style!!!

Vintage and Thrifty Finds Junkin Joe

Good morning friends...how are you today. I am a bit upset this morning because I was unable to complete and photograph my little project for The Mission Possible Great Outdoors. It has been so dark and gloomy...it is not ready for the debut today so check back on Monday and hopefully it will be here right before our BIG Last Tuesday of the month Linky Party. I am so very sorry.

This morning we have a little Junkin Joe feature...he's on a budget ladies so let's see what he found on $15.00!

Remember...the pictures are not that stellar...some are actually poor but I didn't want to disappoint you : )

Let's start with a bit of pink and red...These vintage dishes are exquisite...a tiny touch of crazing just gives it a bit of character...

they are a perfect pair!

This little pretty was in the box of goodies also. I have to tell you that I feel sad sometimes...I was just thinking that these were probably some wonderful Grandmother's dishes...a lady that loved red and a touch of elegance...my heart just kind of sinks sometimes when I think too much.

This pretty little vintage Mikassa tea cup what tucked in there...much prettier in person...a beautiful black and gold edging with the tiniest of pink flowers...it will hold a perfect brew!

This stack was a great find...you see JJ knows that we are adding mosaic tiles back into our shops supply section so it gives him an active job to look for plates to...yes...dare I say...crack into a million pieces! I know...but think of all the cool things that will be created from them...

This little oriental lady is going to be very pretty in a new piece of art!

This was kind of a unique find...I believe it actually is a young vintage piece from the 80's...you place ice in the large compartment and then place your carafe into it to keep the liquid cold...

kind of cool!

Saved this one for last! What is it you say? Well I wondered the same thing when I saw it the box on my table??? JJ knew and was fascinated by it...it is a Bottle Capper! Yep...a vintage capper...you place the bottle on the base and then place a cap inside the little dome...press and viola...

I don't think we will be actually capping our own concoctions but it is cool nonetheless!

While walking through out the thrift shop...keep an eye out for workers with boxes...slowly follow them and see what they are up to...make pleasant conversation as they are putting the new items on the shelves...that way you get to see the FRESH items first hand before others and basically have first pick! It has been a very profitable tip for JJ. Also if you are at the check out and see boxes getting ready to be distributed...maybe just say...wow what's in those and depending on the person's mood...who knows it just might work for you!

25 Memorial Day Ideas and FREE Straw Flag Printables

Morning my friends! How are you! I don't know about you but I completely forgot that this upcoming weekend was Memorial Day...when did that happen? Well I thought that you might like some quick and easy ideas for the weekend festivities.

So let's get those flags a waving and have a peek at some fun decorations...foods...crafts and more!

Oh...before we start...here's a little gift so you can add some of the Red White and Blue to your celebration in a snap...

Just print these out...fold in half ....add a dab of glue and slide on your straws...who wouldn't love a little straw flag on this special weekend!

Now let's take a peek at some really cool ideas!

Here's a really simple but fun idea...take out those jimmies or sprinkles and roll your ice cream cones in them and viola...the perfect Memorial Day treat (check out the home made stand it is on..cool!) Thank you...an ALL YOU creation.

Garlic Scape Pesto and a Great Outdoors Update!

Happy Monday to one and all...hope you all had a wonderful weekend. You know how this month is all about the great outdoors for my Mission Possible Friends and myself (at the end of this post there is an update on the girls!) ...so I thought I would share a fabulous ez pz recipe with a garden ingredient that you may or may not have heard of...it is one of my most favorite things in the world...

The Garlic Scape! This is the time of the year when they start to show themselves and the season only lasts for about 3-4 weeks...so check your local market and then you too can experience...

No...this is not your regular basil pesto...it is made from these
amazing scapes...

aren't the gorgeous! These are garlic scapes...the "flower stalks" of hardneck garlic plants.

When I see these beauties

my mind thinks of the ripest of tomatoes topped with fresh mozzarella and crowned with garlic scape pesto... but then of course pasta should be made, bruschetta, soup, roasted veggie panini and....the list is huge.

Alas...due to my black thumb disease...I get these beauties at my local farm! Hey...NJ is the Garden State...just not in my back yard!

If there is anyone out there that has not experienced the JOY of the Garlic Scape, it is something you must try, you must. Plain and simple it is a heaven like experience and one that you are going to want to have all the time. The season is so incredibly short but the good news is that the pesto does freeze well...more on that below... you are going to be blown away on how many uses this ambrosia of life can create!

The recipe is simple, the process is quick and the results are AMAZING!!!

Your first experience of the harvest should be a simple pesto that accents the flavor, aroma and remarkable taste of the scapes. After that you can play a little. In further batches I like to add a bit of chopped sundried tomatoes, in another some fresh basil or arugula, in another I use walnuts, in another I use almonds...well you get the picture, the world of pesto unlike any other is an open door, it welcomes additions and it can be tailored just so to everyone's favorite tastes.

Basic Garlic Scape Pesto

Ingredients:

approximately 12 garlic scapes (an average bunch) finely chopped

1/2 cup of pinoli nuts or walnuts, or almonds

1/2 cup of your favorite grated cheese (my favorite is a sharp pecorino romano

1/2 cup of good olive oil (I like the full body of Olive Oil, not Extra Virgin) but the choice of course is yours

sea salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste

red crushed hot pepper to taste

1 tsp fresh lemon juice (if you don't have it don't worry, this just keeps the green more vibrant)

Now comes the fun and easy part. Place 1/2 of your oil and then all of your ingredients into the food processor or blender. Start your chopping pulsing mode while adding the remaining half of the olive oil. If you like it really chunky, you will know when to stop and if you like it smooth, keep going until you reach the desired texture. It all revolves around what YOU enjoy, again, there is no right or wrong, personal preference is the name of the game. This recipe yields about 1 full cup. I like to store it in a glass mason jar with a tight seal and you can use the mixture straight from the fridge for just about a week safely. You won't have any left any way so don't worry about it. I have to admit that i just take a spoonful and eat it straight from the jar.

Enjoy it immediately with a fresh sliced Jersey beefsteak tomato and a slice of fresh from the farm mozzarella cheese topped with the pesto.

I also want you to know that thinly sliced scapes can be added to potato salad, noodle salad, tomato salad and anywhere you would add scallion greens, combine the two for an enhance flavor. Enjoy to the fullest! A nice big spoonful of the pesto added to your favorite tomato sauce is incredible!

If you are making extra batches to freeze, just repeat the recipe over and over again, place the mixture in ice cube trays, freeze, pop out and freeze in sealed baggies individually. You can just pop one into mashed potatoes, soup, veggie stew, tomato sauce, fresh tomato sauce, the list never ends. These delicious cubes last about 6 months in the freezer so your love affair is for about 6 months if you prepare for it properly...always store them sealed...air is the enemy! This is a fleeting moment in time, they are here and then they are gone...don't miss out...don't wait till next year...don't wait until tomorrow...Seize the DAY and have a flavor explosion! One that you will be dreaming of in those cold winter months, waiting and wanting the garlic scape season to come again. Experience the JOY!!!!

Morning one and all...how are you today!

It's time for another episode of

This week he was put on a little budget...$20.00...his collecting is starting to mound : ) I think he is going to get a section in my Etsy Shop this week! The selection that he came home with this week was really wonderful and very different from the pretty china fare...the items were a bit larger but fun...how about I show you...by the way we had a guest junker this week...more on that in a minute!

Hi everyone, hope all is well! I have to tell you and I so hate to say this...but the sun is just not shining in New Jersey any more...at least not here in Wayne. We had some rays of light on Sunday but now that is over again...they say that the weekend will be nice (fingers and paws crossed:) Why am I telling you thing? Because NONE of my pictures are turning out so I am doing these little fun posts (at least I hope they are fun)...I don't want you to come here and find nothing new...so hope you enjoy them and hopefully I will hear a little melody (here comes the sun) in a few days so I can get back to regular programming but I have to say doing a post like this once a week is fun!

Home Made Hot Soft Pretzels oh so EASY!!!

Morning everyone...hope you all had a fabulous Mother's day...mine was special as always! Since you kids were so caring and attentive this Mother's Day, how about a piping hot scrumptious treat for them on this

Meatless Monday!

Fresh Hot Pretzels

These are EASY as one...two...three! I have taken a basic pretzel recipe and tweaked it
just a bit and I have to tell you everyone LOVES them. Blink an eye and they are gone. They are truly perfect straight out of the oven but of course coated with a bit of a butter wash and sprinkles of sea salt makes them even better. There are tons of other toppings you can use...sprinkle with your favorite cheese, interesting types of salts, drizzle with chocolate and caramel, fresh cracked pepper and the list goes on. You can also dip them in horseradish mustard, your favorite mustard, your favorite dip, humus, marinara sauce, portobello mushroom gravy...well you get the picture! You can even make S'More pretzels by spreading some fluff (yes...it is not only vegetarian but vegan) drizzle with chocolate and top with graham cracker crumbs. A little bit of imagination will go a long way! Your kids will love it! Have them help in the preparation...it is really that EASY!!!

I just had to share with you the coolest pan! I love it! Not to worry if you do not have one in your closet, you can certainly make your pretzels free-form. I always did but I have to say this tin is great and you will love it! I also like to make pretzel stick and nuggets (the nuggets are wonderful if you are having a party of for the little ones...they are just the right size and no waste:)

Now let's get on to making our pretzels.

Recipe: Hot Pretzels

2 3/4 cups all purpose flours (I used Heckers)

1 tsp. of salt

1 tsp. of sugar

1 package of active dry yeast (1/4oz) fast rising or regular will work fine

1 cup warm water plus about 3 more tablespoon

Now for the Baking Soda Wash you will need

1/8 cup of warm water and 2 tsp. baking soda

3 tbsp. of butter (your choice...they taste yummy with or without!)

kosher or sea salt (course)

Preheat the oven to 500 degrees

Put all of the dough ingredients into a bowl and mix well forming a nice dough and then knead for at least 5 minutes. If you have a mixer, I put all of my ingredients in the mixer and I use the dough hook. First I combine the ingredients and scrape the sides and then i place run the dough hook for a little bit over 5 minutes and let me tell you the dough is perfect! Remember to check it to see if it needs a touch more flour or water. The dough should be very smooth, soft and pliable. When it is ready, just pat into a ball and place it in a nice glass bowl that has been lightly coated with olive oil, cover with cling wrap and put it in a warm dark place (I preheat my over for 2 minutes, shut it off and place the bowl in) let it rise to double the size (takes about 40 minutes to an hour).

Now take the dough and roll it into a thick log and cut into 8 equal parts and roll into lengths about 10 inches and form your pretzels. Now is the time to make your baking soda wash. Add the warm water to the baking soda and mix good, now brush (using a pastry brush) the wash over the whole outside of the pretzel and repeat for all of them. Pop them in the over and cook for 9 minutes, they should be a rich pretzel brown. Remove from the oven, melt your butter and apply to all of the pretzels with the pastry brush and sprinkle with salt...put them on a pretty plate and viola YUM!!!! Eat them as is or try one of the above suggestions or one that you are dying to try. One way or another you are going to LOVE them. This will become a recipe that you make all the time, trust me! Enjoy!

This recipe has been adapted from a basic recipe with some changes, all tested first hand.

A very wonderful

Mother's Day to all...I wish you all the best day ever...enjoy your children...relish the special attention but as we all know every day is Mother's Day because of the love.

I would like to tell you a story...one that is very near and dear to me...one that has gotten me through a lot of grief and sorry. My Mother is with me today and every day but as an angel on my shoulder. Here is the story of

"The Little Messenger"

I have always loved hummingbirds but alas they never seemed to want to visit the pretty dogwood in the yard that held the feeder filled with ruby red nectar...they didn't even feel enticed by the streaming ribbons blowing in the wind. Well that did not discourage us...so year after year after year the feeder was filled...the streamers were hung but no flutters of those tiny little wings. Everyone else would tell me about seeing these little majestic creatures...in fact they would speak of droves of them...but not here (deep sigh) We did not give up...now I digress for a moment...

My Mom lived with us...my dad passed when I was very young and I am an only child. You see my parents got married late in life and it was a miracle that they had me at their age. I guess you could say that I was my mothers world...till her grandchildren arrived :) But my mom was not happy unless I was within shouting distance! Her name was Sue and she was a pip...an Italian lady that loved too much...held God and faith close...a fabulous cook...a heart of gold... and a fiery temper! There was always one thing that I was sure of...a constant throughout my life...this chubby brown haired lady loved me more than anything. Unfortunately my mom had many health issues and the last 10 years of her life we took care of her as she was basically housebound. To show you how wonderful a husband I have...he left his job as an art director to help care for my mom (which was not easy) and work with me from home...(she would not allow ANY ONE else to do anything so I really needed that help to keep our promise of never having to send her to a nursing home...a promise that we kept : ) She had some great years watching Heather and Peter grow...just the sound of their voices made things better and knowing that we were all there. She was a part of everything in our lives...but she grew weaker and on one Sunday afternoon she passed to the heavens.

My life was thrown into an emotional frenzy...I just did not know how to process it all and then I went into my room...no one around...and I quietly asked God to help me through this. I have to admit that I am in need of a bit more reassurance at times...so I asked for a hummingbird...a hummingbird to visit that feeder on the old dogwood tree...the special place that they never came to regardless of how hard we tried. It seemed like a virtually impossible wish! This was between God, my mom and I...I did not share this secret wish with anyone because any other way I would never be sure.

Well a week passed and I was feeling just about as low as can be and all of a sudden I hear Joe and my son Peter screaming for me outside...my heart stopped...I was scared...so I flew out to the deck and there she was...a single hummingbird hovering around the feeder (they were so excited because of the long wait for this to happen...having no idea what it really meant to me) ...she stopped and drank...making sure that I saw her all a flutter and then she disappeared into the sky. The tears flowed...I was weak at the knees but my heart was happy......just like my Mom...she wanted me to know that she was with me always... that she was happy and that we would be together again some day.

So I send you my little messenger today to wish each and everyone of you that is a Mother at heart (yes that means your little furry babies too : ) the best day ever because that is what you all deserve every day.
Just remember the love of a Mother is a Powerful force!

Vintage and Thrifty Finds from Junkin Joe

Friday is here and we wish you the BEST DAY EVER!!!

They say that the SUN will shine today...well we had a little bit of light yesterday so I was able to grab a few pictures for you today.

Hope you enjoy the little re-work of Junkin Joe...not sure yet which way I prefer the layout...but I am curious to see if you like it...I am kind of leaning to the old way...but I am all ears :)

Let's start with JJ's favorite find of the week...

It may not be pink...but it is as sweet as sweet can be. You see
there is a reason why JJ was so drawn to this find...when he was a young boy he had a rabbit named Rascal...a little dutch bunny that thought he was a dog...he used the litter box...begged for cheese (yes...cheese) and knew to stand in front of the fridge door so you really knew what he wanted! Rascal was and is a special part of Joe's heart so you can see why a boy and his bunny called to him!

Now here is the "dish" on the other finds...

He knew that you had been having flower and pink withdrawal...so these a what he could find this time to help you through it! Let's take a little closer look...

Joe suggests that you get to know the people that work at the Thrift Store that you are visiting...friendly chit chat (which he always does any way : ) they get to know you and know your likes...sometimes they will even tuck something away for you! So know your Thrift Store personnel...they can become your best friend! Another fun tip next week.

A very good morning to all. It's time for the

Mission Possible Girls to hit

The Great Outdoors

and we really hope that you join us for a breath of fresh air and some Sun (something that we have NOT seen yet here in New Jersey...it has been forever and still raining).

During the month of May we will be working on some projects that focus on the great oudoors...then we will show you on the 29th at our Last Tuesday of the Monday Linky Party and we sure hope you join us with all of your fabulous creations! Throughout the month you will see little tips...ideas...creations...recipes and more here and on the other girls blogs so keep an eye out...the girls really have flair. When I dream of a garden...here are a few things that pass through my mind...

wouldn't you love to have your cup of coffee while turning the
pages of the newest Stampington Magazine in this kind of setting (deep sigh). You need to know that I was born with a black thumb...yes it's true...also fair skin and a bit of a dislike for dirt...not to mention bugs! ...so I am not exactly what you would call an "woodsy" kind of girl...but I will give it a go and I hope you join me. You can show us a party that you have had outside...flowers that you are growing...planters that you are building or painting...picnics you are preparing...being kind to the creatures of the land...front porches and oh yes...show us what is on your grill too...

mmm...the smell of marinaded veggies and the taste of cool pink lemonade...yum!

Morning my friends. How are you today. Well today's post is not as colorful as most of mine are but I still hope you enjoy this little digital gift...you can print this one out to frame...to make a card...to transfer onto a pretty pillow (how cute this would be in a Nursery)...tote bag...dish towel...you can even resize them for tags and much more.
